Colour of Shanti Sadan

An educational workshop at Shanti Sadan, March 30, 2024, delved into the intricate world of colour, guided by the expertise of artist Rajesh Naidu, Ahmedabad University, Ahmedabad. The program took a step ahead by inviting 37 students to participate in a painting session of and around Shanti Sadan. The students found many colours in the white walls of Shanti Sadan.

Colour and Culture

An educational workshop was held, February 10–11, 2024, guided by Dr. Marianne Keller, an art historian from the Paul Klee Foundation in Bern, and Dr. Cornelia Vogelsanger, an anthropologist, both from Switzerland. Dr. Gayatri Menon, a principal faculty at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad; Dr. Sangita Shroff, who heads the Institute of Design at Nirma University, Ahmedabad; and artist Rajesh Naidu, Ahmedabad University, Ahmedabad, joined the panel. The session included 40 students who found colour and cultural links in the objects that they found in their domestic and daily life.

Labour and Women

Around 30 students of the IIMA elective course on global business and economic history led by Prof. Chinmay Tumbe, had the wonderful opportunity to visit Shanti Sadan on Jan 13th, 2024. Revolving around sessions on labour and women in business and economic history, the venue was perfect as it was home to Anasyuaben Sarabhai, the woman who pioneered labour movements in early 20th-century Ahmedabad. The students enjoyed the interaction and learnt a lot from the ‘Motaben’ exhibit on the life of Anasuyaben Sarabhai and labour movement. Shri Ashok Mehta, Trustee of Shanti Sadan, welcomed the visitors.

More Splendors of Lime

Our previous workshop, ‘Many Splendors of Lime’, focussed on the techniques of applying lime mortar on the walls, ceilings, staircase, flooring, and as a waterproofing layer. To explore further, the ‘More Splendors of Lime’ workshop at Shanti Sadan will build on the ideas of the past and lead us to the future of use of lime. The workshop, April 05 to 10, 2022 will focus on the techniques of applying lime mortar on the walls, lime finish samples with various pigments, reproduction of medallions, aesthetic details, and kunjhas at Shanti Sadan. The workshop will review the work by our karigars and the develop further ideas by experts Sustainability and significance of lime in our changing climate will be in focus.

Painting from Life

The workshop is designed for beginners and those who have emerging painting experience. Participants will learn the fundamentals of the painting process while exploring the subject matter of Still Life. The workshop will be an introduction to objective observation of the world as we see it (not as we think we see it) and rendering that view in artwork; and it will focus on how to creatively but accurately capture and represent the still life by using traditional techniques, materials, and concepts.

Many Splendors of Lime

The Workshop at Shanti Sadan was a manifestation of the ideas of the past and future of Lime Plaster. The five day workshop, January 06 to 10, 2022 focussed on the techniques of applying lime mortar on the old walls, ceilings, staircase, flooring, and as a sheet of waterproofing. The workshop included learning lime finish techniques and making flooring patterns.

Exploration in Wood

Shanti Sadan, in collaboration with CEPT Winter School program, conducted a workshop titled Exploration in Wood from January 10 to 21, 2022 to make measure drawings of five pieces of furniture to develop ability of knowing a piece of furniture through detailed, accurate, and realistic drawings and drawing a furniture piece as a piece of art and design.

Furniture Window

A topical and inviting furniture window is set up at Shanti Sadan for students and young faculty to study significant pieces of furniture of Ahmedabad. From December 20, 2021 visitors are invited to use the window. This is a pilot for larger demonstration

Contemporization of Furniture

Shanti Sadan, in collaboration with CEPT's Winter School program, conducted a workshop titled Contemporization of Furniture from December 20 to 25, 2021 to document, analyse, and adapt key pieces of heritage furniture at Shanti Sadan. Focus was on what the furniture can become today or for tomorrow's use. A publication is being drafted.

Furniture Tectonics

Shanti Sadan, in collaboration with CEPT's Summer School program, conducted a workshop titled Furniture Tectonics from May 24 to 31, 2021 to document, analyse, and adapt key pieces of heritage furniture at Shanti Sadan. This workshop introduced students to the structure of furniture design process and process of manufacturing. A publication is being drafted.
