The Forbes Pigment Collection at the Harvard Art Museums began at the turn of the 20th century, and today contains more than 2,500 pigments. It is the world’s largest collection of historical pigments. In her role as Conservation Coordinator for Harvard Art Museums, Alison Cariens works closely with the Forbes Pigment Collection and its associated collection, the Gettens Collection of Binders and Media.

Her work involves research, cataloguing, assisting with acquisitions, as well as managing access and tours. In this talk Alison will share with you the history and significance of the Forbes Pigment Collection, as well as provide an in-depth look at some of our most intriguing samples. She will share the stories and the science behind some of history’s most fascinating colors, and let you know where to find them in works of art in their galleries.
